Rakta Chandan (Red Sandalwood) is not true sandalwood; in fact, the two come from entirely different trees. Traditional sandalwood is primarily found in the Western Ghats, whereas red sandalwood grows in the Eastern Ghats. Despite their botanical differences, both are commonly referred to as sandalwood because of their similar religious and ritualistic uses.
The paste of Rakta Chandan is mainly used in the worship of goddesses such as Durga, Kali, Tara, and Gauri. Its significance is especially prominent in Shakti Sadhana, where it holds a revered place. Rakta Chandan is also offered during Ganesh–Ambika Pujan, accompanied by the chanting of specific sacred mantras.
