Description

Dhantrayodashi, popularly known as Dhanteras, is usually celebrated two days before Diwali (Deepavali), i.e. on the Trayodashi Tithi, Krishna Paksha (thirteenth day of the waning phase of the Moon) in the Hindu month of Kartik. And interestingly, in several parts of the country, Diwali celebrations begin with Dhanteras, a day meant for worshipping Lord Dhanvantari (the God of medicines), Devi Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth), Lord Ganesha (remover of obstacles) and Lord Kubera (Treasurer of wealth). Read on to know how to perform Dhanteras Puja.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • In several regions across India, Dhanteras marks the beginning of the Diwali festivities
  • It is celebrated on the Trayodashi Tithi, Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik i.e. two days before Deepavali
  • On this day, devotees worship Lord Dhanvantari, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Kubera and Lord Yama

Dhanteras puja vidhi

  • You may choose the temple in your home or an altar for performing the puja. Use a wooden chowki and cover it with a red cloth.
  • Spread some rice on the right front of the chowki.
  • Light an oil/ghee lamp and place it on the rice.
  • Then do Dhyana (align the inner self with God)
  • Spread some rice on the surface and place idols of Goddess Lakshmi and an idol of Lord Ganesha to her left. The layer of rice at the bottom is treated as the Asana (seat).
  • Begin the puja by paying your tribute to Lord Ganesha. All the offerings must be first made to Lord Ganesha.
  • In case you have idols of Lord Dhanvantari and Lord Kubera, you may place them also on the chowki after spreading some rice on it as asanas for them. If you do not have idols of Lord Kubera and Lord Dhanvantari, use two whole suparis and cover them entirely with kalava (sacred thread). You may then place them as idols of these deities on the chowki.
